Holiday Reading Challenge: Sidekick

Title: Monkey Boy
Author of book: Donovan Bixley
Type of book: Fiction, Naval
How you're sidekick helped the main character:
"The French are coming!" The shout spread like wildfire. The sound of boots slamming against the boards was deafening. Jimmy walked towards his cannon station unworried. He knew Jake wouldn't disappoint. He  reached his cannon crew, and a furry object flew towards him, a bag of gunpowder clutched in one of its hands. His monkey handed it to him, and he gave it to the cannon loader, who rammed it down, quickly followed by a lead ball. Then he lit the fuse and a few seconds later the deafening BOOM! sounded, followed by a smashing sound and cheers from everyone on board.

Above decks later:
"Did you see that men! The French ship down and not a single casualty! We have this monkey and the monkey boy, Jimmy tom thank for that!" The crew cheered three times: "Jimmy! Jimmy! Jimmy! Jimmy!" and hoisted him and Jake (his monkey, of course) on top of their shoulders. Right then he felt like the king of the world.

Holiday Reading Challenge: Retell

Holiday reading challenge: Book recomendation

The book I am recommending: White Fang

Who I am recommending it to: Mengchun

Why I am recommending it (3 reasons): I would recommend this book to Mengchun for these reasons:

  • She likes books that are Non-Fiction
  • She reads books that have animals in it
  • It isn't too long (like Narnia) but it isn't like a year 3 length book either. This means that you cannot sit there for like, 1 second and be finished and yet you cannot sit there and read it for 24 hours straight, if you know what I mean.

This is my recommendation for the holiday reading challenge activity called: Make a recommendation. For this activity, as you see above, we have to choose a book, recommend it to someone and then explain why recommended it to that person in the form of three reasons.

Holiday reading challenge - Cover Design

This is my new design of the cover of the book: Time hunters: Cowboy showdown by Chris Blake. We can do this activity by choosing any book and making a new cover for it. We also have to include why our cover is better so here is my reason why: My cover is different by not showing cowboys. Instead, I show their mode of transportation back in time to get to the Wild West: A whirlwind. I did this because by looking at the title, you can tell there will be cowboys in it. It's kind of obvious there will be cowboys in it isn't it? This is why my cover is better.

Recount:
White Fang is a half wolf half dog, that has been through it all from living in forests then in the city. Here's his story.

Holiday reading task - Goanimate

Holiday Reading task by Thomas R6 on GoAnimate

This is my GoAnimate on the book White Fang. I chose to show the part when White fang and his mother Kiche get found by the Indians and taken in.

Holiday Reading Challenge: Setting

This is one of the activities for the holiday reading challenge given to the seniors of our school. For this activity, I had to choose a book (I chose Rick Riordans Heroes of Olympus: The house of Hades (Fiction, Mythology)). The setting in the story I chose was the lowest floor of the House of Hades. I drew: The doors of Death and the remains of a altar to Hades, of which was destroyed which explains the random pieces of rubble.

These are the things that I am good at.

Maths Problem

This is my maths problem for today. I solved it using my knowledge of fractions.
Here is a problem for you to solve:
There are 12 kids in detention. they are 1/24 of the school. 1/4 of the kids at school have no lunch. How many kids have no lunch? And there are 84 just-in-case lunch boxes for the kids with no lunch. How many lunch boxes will be left over after the kids get one each?

Go Animate CyberSmart Smart Money

Scamming by Thomas R6 on GoAnimate

This is my Go Animate on Scamming. It shows an example of scamming and that you should delete anything saying you have won money. It could be real though! So here are some ways to know it is fake:

1. If you have not bought a lotto ticket then it is too good to be true.
2. If they ask for money ignore it.
3. Google who it says.
4. If they ask for details and you are sure they are a scammer, don't reply.

Maths Problem solving

For maths in problem solving we did a problem. Here is the problem and my solution.

Problem: You have gone to the store and bought a fox, a chicken and some corn. Now you are by the river. If you leave the corn with the chicken, the chicken will eat the corn. If you leave the chicken with the fox, the chicken's in big trouble. You have a boat but it can only take you and one other thing because if it has any more weight on board it will sink. How many trips in your boat can you make to get all three to the other side without the chicken eating the corn or the fox eating the chicken?

Solution: You take the chicken across first. This is trip 1. You come back with nothing. This is trip 2. You take the fox. This is trip 3. If you leave the chicken then it will get eaten so you take it back. This is trip 4. You take the corn across because otherwise the chicken will eat the corn. This is trip 5. You come back with nothing. This is trip 6. You take the chicken. This is trip 7. You have now taken everything!

I have done only one of the two ways of solving it. Comment on this if you figure out the other way.

Elective

This term we are doing electives. Electives are happening every Tuesday, where we do our chosen activity from 1:30 to 3:00 when we go home. My elective is riding. In riding is: Cyprus, Mya, Ofa, Paige, Oh Sen, Latham and me. We do it with Mr Johnston. We learn the basic rules of safety on the road such as: How to go around corners without flipping over, how to pass a parked car, How to avoid obstacles, how to turn and sometimes we do competitions such as who can go the fastest without going past a point as we were to imagine it was a brick wall. It is heaps of fun and I can't wait untill the next time we do electives.

Ice cream procedural writing

This is my DLO on procedural writing. I made this after we made Ice cream on Friday. If you follow these steps correctly you will be able to make your own ice cream, providing that you don't shake the bag too hard like I did and make the salt go into the ice cream.

Clauses

This is my presentation on clauses. It shows what Independent clauses and Dependent clauses are. A dependent clause is not grammatically correct even if you put a capital letter and a full stop on it. A independent clause only needs a capital letter and a full stop to be a simple sentence.

Anzac rememberance

Today, at 11:30, right after the year seven and eight’s arrived back from Tech. We were told by Mrs Anderson to only eat our morning tea and not play. It was because of a special ceremony remembering the New Zealanders that died at Gallipoli 100 years ago all because of their Sergeants getting shot by Turkish snipers. Therefore, the orders weren’t passed on so every soldier didn’t know what to do, causing most of them to get killed or injured, and even then, because they were surrounded they couldn’t even get to the infirmary to get treated! When Abdurrahman and I arrived  to do the music, Miss Kirkpatrick said that she would do it because we didn’t have much time to practice and she wanted it to be perfect. So that meant that Abdurrahman and I had stayed up to about 12:00 writing what we were going to do down on a document for nothing! At least we wouldn’t have embarrassed ourselves by accidentally mucking it up. When we were all sitting down Mr Johnston and a woman in military clothes (Mr Johnston introduced her as Staff Sergeant Stacy). Patrick and Wiremu then put up the flag as Miss Kirkpatrick played the tune called The last stand. Mr Johnston and Staff Sergeant Stacy then gave speeches and then Miss Kirkpatrick then played rouse as Wiremu and Patrick put the flag up. Everybody went back to class but then Miss Kirkpatrick called us into Room 5 so Staff Sergeant Stacy could tell us about what she did. She explained that she was from Papatoetoe and she had joined when she was 19. She had then done missions to get her medals. Finally she left and everyone had lunch.

My special effect collage

This is a fotor using special effects.

My collage

This is my collage that I made on some highlights of this term. I enjoyed Tech the most because I got to learn how to make animations and mind maps. Next term the Year 7's will be cooking. I learnt all of the features of a recount and how to include them in my writing. I found Japanese hard because I had almost never even heard any Japanese words before  this year. My favourite subject was maths as always as I enjoy figuring out problems. In term 2 I would like to improve my writing as I think I am not as good at writing as the mother subjects. The thing I have enjoyed the most at tech was probably learning how to use scratch (A site where you can make animations).

My mind maps

These are some mind maps I made at tech.

Spelling

This is my result for the spelling test I just did.II got 18 right and 7 wrong.

A special day for Manaiakalani

This is my DLO (Digital Learning Object) that I made on Google Presentations. It was based on the trip that all the schools in the Manaiakalani cluster made too see a waka from Hawaii. It had embarked on its journey and travelled all the way to New Zealand. The schools had walked or come by bus to get to Pt England. Each school had its own spot for all it's students to sit in. We sang all the songs that we had been leaning for the past week. I think we did an awesome job. The people that had come from Hawaii then made speeches. Everyone except for the school leaders walked back or took a bus back to school. The people from Hawaii will soon travel on the same journey all the way back to their home country.
